Description
Introduction to organic chemistry
1. Introduction to organic chemistry(alkanols)
Alkanols are organic compounds that contain one or more hydroxyl(-OH) functional groups
attached to a saturated carbon atom. They are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary
depending on the number of carbon atoms bonded to carbon carrying the hydroxyl group.
Examples:CH3OH, C2H5OH
1.1. Reagents apparatus and equipment
Common reagents used in alkanols include oxidizing agent such as potassium dichromate, potassium permanganate. Also dehydrating agents such as sulphuric acid
1.2. work place to perform chemical reactions
Alkanols chemical reactions are done in a well ventilated chamber. The laboratory include fume
hoods for handling volatile alkanols, fire extinguishers for flammable substances, and proper
waste disposal systems. Also, personal protective equipment such as gloves, lab coats, and safety
goggles must be worn at all times to prevent chemical exposure.
